Seville Olive Oil History and Overview

Spain actually produces nearly half the world’s total olive oil, with the South of Spain (in particular Andalusia) making up a large portion of this.

Thanks to its dry and hot climate all year round, Seville is thought of as Spain’s most acclaimed olive growing region allowing olive varieties like Picual, Hojiblanca, and Manzanilla de Sevilla to thrive.

Seville also boasts something called Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) status which can be found printed on every bottle from this area. It’s basically an approval that the olive oil is of a certain quality – a literal stamp of approval!

The outskirts of Seville is home to many family-run almazaras (olive oil farms) that have perfected small batch oil production for generations.

The main olive harvest runs from October through January. This is the best time to see olive grovs at their best and to also view the pressing process. However, in more recent years tastings and tours are available year-round through shops, museums and small farms.

Where to Buy Olive Oil in Seville

It may sound extreme, but Spain tightly regulates olive oil production, especially the acclaimed Extra Virgin grade. When visiting as a tourist, a bottle of premium olive oil can be a great gift or souvenir when travelling home.

Here are some of the best places to buy your Olive Oil when in Seville:

  • Farmer’s markets in Seville provide some of the best local Olive Oil at competitive prices. Just ensure the bottles are clearly labeled and marked before purchasing, especially if looking to travel home with them.
  • Specialty food stores like El Corte Ingles sell oils from small local farms, and have a whole premium food selection of oils on the top floor.
  • Some Seville Olive Oil tours provide bottles of the oils tasted to be purchased directly from the farm.
