Palacio de Dueñas is a royal palace in central Seville, also known as the ‘House of Alba‘. It opened to the public in 2016, allowing visitors to see over 1400 art pieces and experience the royal home and gardens.

Whilst not a major Seville attraction, a visit really gives you a feel for traditional Andalusian architecture and design, making it well worth a visit when in Seville (even if it is just to get some respite from the heat!).

Visiting Palacio de las Duenas Seville

The palace is not as large as some of Seville’s other impressive Palaces, so you’ll only need around an hour to explore the full building. However, if you’re looking to give your legs a break from a busy day of sight-seeing, then the gardens are a perfect place to relax.

There are some information points around the building, but for those of you who want to understand the full history of the house an audio guide is recommended.

I have been 3 times to the palace to visit and every single time it has been very quiet. There are never queues or crowds and this only adds to the tranquility.

For me, I found the palace to be as interesting as the famous Royal Alcazar. It feels a lot more lived-in with rooms fully furnished and always ready to host members of the Alba family.

During the summer the palace is host to evening events, such as opera performances and art exhibitions. It’s worth checking the official website for any upcoming events.

What to See in Palacio de las Duenas Seville

As with many royal houses in Seville the gardens are a particular highlight – offering a peaceful oasis from the hustle of the city centre. The gardens are full with sculptures and small fountains as well as beautifully kept. Check out how intricate the tile-work is around the fountains, really beautiful.

The Palacio de las Duenas has a very impressive art collection, and as of 2024 the palace is home to over 1400 pieces of art. This number is primarily made up of paintings, but also features plenty of sculptures, royal tapestries and historic artifacts (furniture and silverware).

If you’re looking for an excellent photo opportunity I would recommend getting a picture in front of the bougainvillea facade – a highly detailed and impressive piece of work.

History of Palacio de las Duenas Seville

Palacio de las Dueñas was built in the early 15th century initially belonging to the Pineda family (a popular and wealthy family in Seville) and served as their residence for nearly 100 years.

In the late 15th century, the palace changed hands and was sold to the Catalina de Ribera. It was said the sale was a result of the Pineda family needing to raise funds to pay for the release of Pedro de Pineda, who was taken prisoner by the Moors during the Granada War.

Over the years, it has been the home of various different nobles, including the famous poet Antonio Machado, who was born there in 1875.

It’s been a part of the House of Alba since the early 17th century, and they still own it today. In 2016, the palace was opened to the public for the first time.

Palacio de las Duenas Location and How to Get There

The Palacio de las Duenas is located in central Seville, in the district of Santa Catalina, making it convenient to visit alongside a large number of Seville’s top attractions.

It is possible to walk to the palace from the centre, and it is easy to get to via public transport.

You can get to the Palacio de las Duenas by taking the tram. The closest tram stop is Puerta Jerez which is then a 15 minute walk to the palace.

Unfortunately there is no Metro station within reasonable walking distance.

With regards to buses, you can take any of the following TUSSAM buses (01, 05, 10, 24), and get off at Jerónimo de Córdoba, which is then 4 minutes from the palace.
