Overview of Teatro de la Maestranza

Seville Opera House (Teatro de la Maestranza) opened in 1991 and has since become a big deal in the Seville and Spain as a whole. The building has a modern design but it also fits well with the historic architecture of the city. The opera house has hosted many international artists and performances, making it a hotspot for music and culture lovers.

The name “Maestranza” comes from the nearby bullring, which has the same name and is one of the oldest in Spain.

The building went through several design changes and updates over the years, and as of 2024 it can now seat about 1,800 people.

The visually striking exterior exemplifies 19th century neoclassicism with Its ionic columns, balustrade galleries, arched windows, and stone reliefs. The building spans four floors visible from outside. A central triumphal archway leads into the ground floor lobby.

Two grand marble staircases at the entrance ascend to the main doors of the auditorium and large bronze lamps on stone bases flank the entry stairs – it really is very grand!

The U-shaped auditorium follows a classic Italian-style horseshoe design surrounding the stage. It houses 1,738 seats across two levels providing intimacy along with excellent acoustics. Modern theatre machinery allows complex stage mechanics for operatic productions.
